While leaving Trichy after visiting the great Srirangam temple , I came across an ancient, fort-like structure on a hillock just outside the city. But what really caught my attention was the presiding deity inside. We are used to seeing grand stone Shiva Lingams in ancient temples, but here, the Lingam is formed from a mud anthill. Because of its fragile nature, it does not receive the usual water or milk Abhishekam. Instead, priests perform only Taila Abhishekam (oil bathing). Beyond this unique feature, the site has a long and layered history.
